Evaluation-In what ways does my media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The majority of the whole film and the whole of the opening sequence uses forms and conventions of gritty urban British crime dramas. From the typical postcode location to the typical characters portrayed and used in the film and the opening sequence. Their is plenty of violence in our film and our opening sequence and that is the case in many crime dramas that I researched. They always usually start with a deal that has gone wrong that ends up in violence like in Heat for example and we felt that was one of the best ways to start the film as it will make the audience more interested in the storyline.

However their is one thing we have done where we have challenged a form and convention of a typical urban British crime drama storyline and that is a criminal and a policeman working together. This is a very rare storyline and you often find that the criminal and policeman are enemies and against each other in crime dramas. However that is not the case for our storyline and we felt it would be good for us to have a unique storyline something that is a bit different from all the other usual crime dramas.

Evaluation-Who would be the audience for your media product? How did you attract/address your audience?

The age range that I would suggest that would like our media product is between 13-21 mostly because their are plenty of young stars in the film.

The media product can be liked by both genders although females might find some scenes to violent, graphic and disturbing.

The media product has an urban working class background behind it mostly with most of the characters in education, employed in a normal standard job or even unemployed or not in education.

The character types and interests in this media product are very unique but members of the audience particularly those who also come from a working class background/postcode area can relate to some of the characters struggles. For example I know that there are many people who have been in Didgy Dan's situation and have lost a relative due to knife crime.

There are different types of regionality and ethnicity in this media product that is recognisable as the media product is set in London which is a diverse and cultural city. From the average white man, to the young black gangster, to the afro/ carribean man on his market stall, to even the Asian working in his corner shop there are many regions and ethnicities that the audience will be able to recognise.

As the media product is mostly set in a postcode area there are plenty of hip hop and grime soundtracks from well known urban artists e.g Giggs, Krept and Konan, Skepta etc that the audience will recognise which will attract them even more to the media product.

Evaluation- Looking back at the preliminary task, what do I feel I have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I feel that I have had a slight progression from the preliminary to the main task. There are some new skills and media vocabulary that I have learnt and used in my role in the full product.

I have been the actor in both the preliminary task and the main task and I have learnt how to use mise en scene better to show representation of age and ethnicity whether by costume or facial expression.

Even though I have not been editing that much I have observed how editing can make a product look much better whether its doing a voiceover, editing background colours, adding sound to the product, or cutting out parts of scenes.

I have also learnt what type of camera shot is best for a particular situation; this is something that I struggled with in the beginning of the course. For example I have learnt that it is best to do a P.O.V shot when you want to show the audience what it is like from the characters view. I have also been involved in an in depth focus shot an A grade camera shot for the first time which looked really good.

Evaluation-How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product as a whole represents many particular social groups. These social groups include ethnicity, class and status, age, regional identity and gender.

The opening sequence of our media product shows many examples of how we showed representation of these social groups with the camera shots and mise en scene used.

The establishing shots we used in the beginning and the end of the opening sequence represent ethnicity, class and status and regional identity. Black people that don't live in the upper class parts of London are normally referred to as being poor and living in the ghetto and the shot of the block of flats indicates that.

The costume that the characters wore in the opening sequence are associated with what black male teenagers will normally wear e.g hoody, jeans, trainers. The scene also showed violence with one of the characters stabbing the other character and crime and violence is the stereotype that black male teenagers are associated with.

Our script also establishes the representation of regional identity as the majority of the dialogue used is slang something that the ghetto parts of London are known for speaking. Also there is a lot of UK grime and hip hop soundtracks used in the media product something that black teenagers that are from the London Ghetto are known for listening to.

The representation of social groups in the media product perfectly compliments the genre of a British crime drama as there are plenty of binary oppositions you could use with this genre and the social groups represented in this media product such as good vs bad, right vs wrong, criminals vs the police, hero vs villain, sane vs insane and many more.

Evaluation-What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product

There are a few technological skills that I have learnt from this process. The camera that we used was a Cannon XF300 and although I was the actor in our film I still learnt how to hold the camera and to practise a couple shots just in case our cameraman wasn't able to film the film. I even managed to practise an in depth focus shot one of the more complex shots. This is a big progression from the preliminary task where I was learning to use a more simpler handheld cannon.

I have also learnt the many editing techniques that you can use when using Final Cut Pro X. I have learnt about how you can do matching on action by cutting out unnessecary things from scenes and cutting to the next scene making it look as smooth as possible. Other techniques I have learnt from using Final Cut Pro X are how to change the background colour of a media product, How to control the pace of a media product depending on whether you want it fast or slow and how to add sound to the media product such as a voiceover, diegetic or non-diegetic sound or a soundtrack.

Evaluation- What kind of media institution might distribute our product and why

We came up with our own production company called Yellow Street production. We found it kind of difficult to come up with a name but we thought that this production company name suited our media product as it sounded like the type of production company that will film our film.

Our film will need the support of a top British distributor/ production company in order to get our film into cinemas. Even though our movie will probably be a local and even a regional success it is unlikely to be a global success. The movie is unlikely to be understood and appeal to a global audience so we wont need to call upon the big six. We need all the local London support we could get and by having a top British distributor like Lions gate  for example distributing and promoting our film it is more likely that our movie will be as successful as it can be.

There are other ways our film can be distributed such as going on DVD for cheap at stores such as HMV. It can also be found online at legal and legit websites such as Netflix and Love Film and these websites will give the movie more promotion.

Filming Day Review

We have just come back from what I must say is a great day of filming.

We managed to transfer all the equipment to the location of Filming without really struggling too much or breaking the equipment. It was nice I had an extra pair of hands from the whole group and that I didn't have to carry everything by myself.

We managed to film all the scenes as smooth as possible as well having the time and patience to go back and make improvements. We had a laugh as well while filming and we had many behind the scenes funny bloopers and moments.

Before we left for filming the weather conditions was a bit of a problem and we were concerned with how we would be able to film but the conditions improved so it didn't turn out to be a problems.

The group is really buzzing and finally after a long process we have finally finished filming I am so pleased.
